What is jel coat?

Jel coat, also spelled as gelcoat, is a pigmented resin-based material used to coat the surfaces of fiberglass and other composite materials. It is a thick, high-viscosity liquid that is applied to the surface of the composite material using a spray gun, roller, or brush.

The primary purpose of a jel coat is to provide a durable, long-lasting finish that protects the underlying composite material from exposure to the elements, including water, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations. It also provides a smooth, glossy surface finish that can be sanded, polished, and waxed to a high shine.

Jel coat is typically composed of a mixture of polyester or vinyl ester resin, catalysts, and pigments. The pigments provide the desired color, while the resin and catalysts provide the curing properties needed to harden the surface layer of the composite material.

Jel coat is commonly used in the marine industry for boats, yachts, and other watercraft because of its excellent resistance to water and UV rays. It is also used in the automotive and aerospace industries for body panels, wind fairings, and other components requiring a smooth, glossy finish and protection from the elements.
